The Salihara cultural center is set to organize the 2018 edition of its biannual Salihara International Performing Arts Festival (SIPFest), presenting international dance, theater and music troupes from France, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Belgium and Indonesia from Aug. 4 to Sept. 9.

This year’s SIPFest is also a special one for Salihara, as it will also mark the cultural center’s 10th anniversary.

Themed “Di Seni Senang (happy go artsy), this year’s SIPFest offerings include the French saxophone quartet Quasar Quatuor de Saxophones as well as Indonesian actors Sita Nursanti and Reza Rahadian, who will spontaneously perform a script written by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour (the actors will only open an envelope containing the script for the first time once they are onstage).

Local highlights include Indonesian choreographer Otniel Tasman, a monologue on the life of national figure Sutan Sjahrir by actor Rendra Pamungkas in a play directed by Rukman Rosadi, as well as lecture performances by composer and pianist Ananda Sukarlan on classical music as well as dancer and choreographer Didik Nini Thowok on gender variations in Indonesian dances, for instance.

A Canadian string quartet called Quatuor Bozzini and Malaysian musical act Toccata Studio will also showcase the latest performing arts innovations where music, dance and lighting technology intersect.

During the festival, the cultural center’s open spaces will also be graced by installations and visual artworks by Jakarta-based artists Krisgatha Achmad and Meliantha Muliawan as well as an artist from Bandung, West Java named Aries Setiadi.
