n upgrade to the commuter train electronic ticketing system has caused long queues at train stations as passengers line up to pay for single-trip tickets and to tap at the few operating automatic gates.

Rochman, a commuter at Manggarai Station, South Jakarta, said that he had to queue twice just to enter the station.

“I'm already tired [from lining up to] buy the commuter train ticket, and now I have to queue for 30 minutes more just to tap in [at the gate to enter],” Rochman said on Saturday as reported by kompas.com.

Passengers at Pondok Cina Station in South Jakarta also had to queue for a long time just to get inside the station.

Of the nine automatic gates, only one gate was operational for commuters to get in and one to get out of the station.

“I'm confused. There are a lot of gates, why is there only one gate working for the passengers to get in and get out?” Elena, a commuter at Pondok Cina Station, said.

Previously, commuter line operator PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) had announced that starting from July 21, old multi-trip cards (KMT) with a serial number starting with 1001 would no longer be usable as the operator was currently upgrading its electronic ticketing and advised the holders to replace them with newer ones.

KCI spokesperson Eva Chairunisa apologized for the long queues at the ticket windows and automatic gates at the stations because of the system upgrade.

“PT KCI is currently upgrading and maintaining its electronic-ticketing equipment starting from 1 a.m. and it is still ongoing,” Eva said in a written statement on Saturday.

She said the upgrade and maintenance would take a while. “Several gates and ticket windows in several stations cannot operate yet [because of the system upgrade],” she said. (ami)
