assengers of major ferry operator ASDP Indonesia can now enjoy a faster method of buying tickets as the company has started its partnership with state-owned banks to provide a cashless payment service.
The state-owned company has collaborated with members of the Association of State-Owned Banks (Himbara), namely Bank Negara Indonesia, Bank Tabungan Negara, Bank Mandiri and Bank Rakyat Indonesia, to launch the service from Aug. 15.
The company’s commercial director Yusuf Hadi said the new service would be applied in four major areas, namely Merak, West Java; Bakauheni, Lampung; Ketapang, East Java and Gilimanuk, Bali.
During the first phase, the new service would be applicable for passengers without vehicles and those with two-wheeled and small four-wheeled vehicles. Gradually, all types of vehicles, including freight, will be able to use cashless payments by March 2019.
“One of the ASDP’s tasks is to digitalize processes for every business line, including ticket sales,” Yusuf said during the signing ceremony between the ASDP and Himbara in Jakarta on Monday.
The ASDP expects that cashless transactions will ensure customers feel more comfortable in using ferry services and eventually increase the company’s revenue.
Moreover, a cashless payment system can help the company minimize fraud and improve the recording of daily transactions.
As of June, the company recorded 3,547,102 passengers without vehicles, while those with two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles stood at 2,009,684 and 1,122,688 respectively.
Himbara secretary Budi Satria said the partnership with the ASDP was part of a program encouraged by the State-Owned Enterprises Ministry to coordinate between state companies, including supporting the nationwide non-cash movement initiated by the government and Bank Indonesia.
The nationwide distribution of electronic money by four state-owned banks was represented by a 92 percent year-on-year (yoy) surge to 103.7 million e-money cards distributed as of June, data from Himbara shows.
The use of e-money has increased, with transaction value at Rp 9.4 trillion by the end of June, skyrocketing 240 percent from the same period in 2017.
Budi said the frequency of e-money usage increased three times last year to 761 million as more merchants received non-cash payments.
Since its establishment in 1973, ASDP Indonesia has managed 29 office branches and 35 ports across the country as well as operated 151 ships.
The ASDP now operates three business divisions. The first division, a transportation and ferry business, contributed 59 percent of its revenue as of the first half, followed by 24 percent from the port business and 17 percent from miscellaneous services and partnerships.
The company is targeting Rp 278 billion (US$19.02 million) in net profit this year. During the first half, it recorded Rp 112 billion in net income.
The ASDP has also allocated Rp 626 billion in capital expenditure to purchase new ships this year.
