T

he Indonesian wrestling team is facing an unfavorable situation as the athletes failed to reach the semis in five men’s freestyle wrestling categories, leaving their sole hope on the 125-kilogram category, which is set to be held on Aug. 20.

The failing athletes in the 57 kg, 65 kg, 74 kg and 86 kg events could only see the semifinals from afar. Among the failing athletes, Eko Roni, who is competing in the 57-kg category, was the closest one who can get to quarterfinals with one win in the round of 16.

Eko, 27, booked an easy win in the first match against Sri Lanka’s Charles Fernando, with a 10-0 score or victory by technical superiority before the first six-minute round ended.

However, in the second game, Eko was defeated by Liu Minghu from China, who went into the quarterfinals after he got a victory by forfeit with a score of 5-0 as Yemen’s Mohammed Abdullah Derhem Almaghebri did not show up in the game.

The last hope for Indonesia that day ended with a 1-3 victory by points for China.

Meanwhile, Ardiansyah Darmansyah, Rizki Dermawan and Fahriansyah, who competed in the 65 kg, 74 kg and 86 kg categories respectively, had to bow to opponents in early rounds.

The five classes, however, still have the possibility to clinch bronzes.

With a capacity of around 1,000 seats in a ballroom-turned-venue at Assembly Hall A, Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), fans from India, South Korea and Indonesia dominated the area.

Indonesia still has the chance to clinch gold medals in the men’s freestyle 125 kg, which comprises six classes from men’s Greco-Roman wrestling and also six women’s freestyle wrestling.(dic)
