A

round 300 motorcycles were seized and loaded onto trucks by the Palembang Transportation Agency in a no-parking zone at the Jakabaring Sports City (JSC) on Thursday.

The agency’s operational and traffic division head, Martha Edison, said most of the vehicles had been parked on the sidewalk below the Jakabaring LRT Station.

"Most of the motorcycles belong to volunteers and organizers of the Asian Games," he told The Jakarta Post.

Martha said the agency had informed the public about the no-parking zone a month before the Games kicked off last Saturday. The agency had put up no-parking banners at the LRT station, but motorcyclists were still violating the rules.

"We have provided a total of five parking spots around Jakabaring, but many motorcyclists do not want to park there," she said.

Palembang Legislative Councillor Endang Larasati Lelasari said the agency's efforts in disseminating the information had been insufficient, and therefore many motorcyclists had no idea that the designated parking spots were free of charge.

"Besides, our people do not obey the rule. If they don't want to walk a long distance [from the parking spot to the venues] could take shuttle buses into Jakabaring," she said. (yan)
