P

olice are looking to charge a driver, identified only as MA, who allegedly assaulted a 14-year-old, identified only as RA, on Wednesday, with the suspect facing up to five years in prison.

Jakarta Police general crimes director Nico Afinta said the suspect would be charged under Article 351 of the Criminal Code for assault and with Article 76c of the Child Protection Law, which forbids acts of violence against minors.

Nico added the police had arrested and investigated MA, interviewed witnesses, and collected surveillance footage.

“Based on the suspect’s testimony and official report, MA is now a suspect,” said Nico on Friday as reported by kompas.com.

MA reportedly choked and beat middle schooler RA, causing serious nose bleeding, because RA’s car had abruptly braked in front of MA during heavy traffic on the Jagorawi toll road. RA’s car, which was being driven by the victim's elder brother, had itself abruptly braked in response to the car in front of it.

MA’s car, a black Chevrolet Captiva, attracted particular media attention because it had a military sticker on the license plate, fueling speculation that MA was affiliated with the military. Authorities have since repudiated the claim, saying the sticker was an accessory.

Nico condemned MA’s violence saying anger was no excuse to involve minors in adult affairs, especially if it escalated into violence.

“We duly implore all road users to respect each other,” said Nico. (nor)
