he 2018 Asian Games organizing committee has said that 90 percent of seats at all venues had been allocated to the general public to cater to the high interest the Indonesian public showed in the multi-sport competition, particularly in events featuring Indonesian athletes.
Indonesian Asian Games Organizing Committee (INASGOC) media and public relations director M. Buldansyah said that the decision was made in agreement with the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA).
He said that the high public demand for Asian Games tickets was reflected in the 100 percent sales of available tickets to nearly every event in which an Indonesian athlete appeared.
“The organizer has allocated [a certain number of seats] from the venues' limited seating capacity for journalists, athletes, representatives of participating countries, world sports federations and sponsors ,” Buldansyah said in a press statement The Jakarta Post received on Monday.
He said a number of seats were also left empty for security purposes like evacuation in accordance with international operational procedures.
OCA director general Husain Al-Musallam had earlier sent a letter to INASGOC chief Erik Thohir on Aug. 21, asking about the many empty seats he saw at several different Asian Games venues.
“The OCA, therefore, instructs that not more than 10 percent of the seats should be reserved for officials,” al-Musallam said in the letter, a copy of which was made available to the Post. (bbn)
