akarta Governor Anies Baswedan has said the city administration is committed to tackling stunting given that 27 percent of Jakarta children still suffer from the condition.

Even though the capital’s stunting level is below the national level of 32 percent in urban areas and 42 percent in rural areas, Anies said stunting was a basic problem that needed to be eradicated by the city administration.

During a national campaign to prevent stunting at the National Monument (Monas), Central Jakarta, on Sunday, Anies encouraged women who attended the event to do their best to fight stunting.

“Let’s be serious [in fighting stunting]. There will be a joint program conducted by several agencies to make sure that we can solve the problem. We hope the stunting level can be reduced,” Anies said on Sunday as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

He added that the role of parents and the government was vital in the effort to tackle stunting. Parents should be aware about the nutrition given to their children, especially during the first 1,000 days of life.

Anies went on to say that there would be programs to give additional nutritious food to children as well as campaigns to promote breast-feeding of babies.

“If in Jakarta the stunting problem continues, how can we expect that other regions will be freed from the problem. We want to be serious in resolving the issue,” he said.
