G

erindra Party politician Mohamad Taufik, who claims to have been assigned by his party to fill the vacant Jakarta deputy gubernatorial post, is officially running for a legislative seat, again.

The Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) has listed his name on the final candidate list (DCT) for the 2019 legislative election.

The decision was made after the Supreme Court annulled a KPU regulation banning people convicted of graft, the sexual assault of minors or drug abuse from contesting the election.

Previously, Gerindra removed Taufik’s name from its list of potential legislative candidates after being instructed to do so by the KPU Jakarta as he was a former graft convict.

“We have included his name on the DCT,” KPU Jakarta chairperson Betty Epsilon Idroos said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.

Taufik, who currently serves as Jakarta City Council deputy speaker, was declared guilty of corruption in 2004 when he was head of the KPU Jakarta.

The court sentenced him to 18 months in prison for causing state losses of Rp 488 million (US$33,687) in a corruption case involving the procurement of election materials.

Taufik filed an appeal for a judicial review with the Supreme Court to challenge the KPU regulation banning ex-graft convicts from contesting the election. (ahw)
