elecommunication services are being restored in Palu, Central Sulawesi, and the surrounding areas after a strong earthquake and tsunami struck the region last week, state-owned telecommunication company PT Telkom Indonesia vice president of corporate communication Arif Prabowo has said.
He said the company was now repairing the infrastructure that was damaged by the 7.4-magnitude earthquake, which killed hundreds of people and damaged housing and infrastructure.
“At present, SMS and voice call services have started to be restored in a number of strategic points in Palu. We are prioritizing government institutions. Meanwhile, the 4G service has also been restored in Toli-Toli, Poso and Luwuk,” he said in a statement received by The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
He added that in Donggala voice call and internet services had been restored, however for IndiHome customers, whose network uses fiber optic cable, their service had not yet been restored because of ongoing electricity problems.
“We have provided free wi-fi services for local people in the area surrounding the Telkom office in Donggala,” Arif said, adding that TelkomGroup had also provided satellite telecommunications services through its subsidiary Telkomsat.
“Telkom is working maximally to restore the telecommunication services to help government officials coordinate with all officers currently in the field,” Arief added. (bbn)
