T

he Jakarta Police are set to commence the maiden operation of the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (E-TLE) system in Central Jakarta, from Jl. Sudirman through Jl. MH Thamrin, on Nov. 1.

“The operation will start on Nov. 1. It is currently in a trial run, so tickets are not being charged [against violators],” Jakarta Police traffic unit chief Sr. Comr. Yusuf said on Monday, as quoted by kompas.com.

In an attempt to disseminate information about the e-traffic system, the police circulated brochures and displayed banners on the road on Monday.

Yusuf added that preparations for the implementation of the e-traffic system were almost complete.

“The website for violators to seek clarification is ready. The accuracy of the traffic cameras is also fine,” he said. “Even though there was a license plate that could not be captured yesterday, we hope such obstacles can be addressed [during the trial run].”

Four 24-hour CCTV cameras have been installed near Sarinah, the Arjuna Wiwaha statue and Kebon Sirih junction to capture the license plates of vehicles that violate traffic regulations.

The cameras, which are connected to the Jakarta Police's Traffic Management Center (TMC), will be used to catch violators of the odd-even traffic policy, traffic lights, road signs and speed limits, as well as motorcyclists without helmets.

Once the license plates are captured, the TMC is set up to automatically identify the vehicles’ owners. The police will then refer to the visual evidence and deliver the ticket to the violators’ residences. The violators must then pay the ticket through an appointed bank. (sau)
