he Jakarta administration will install 1,900 meters of sheet piling along the notoriously malodorous Sentiong River in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, next month.
Jakarta Water Resource Agency east flow unit head Nelson Simanjuntak said the agency would first explain the plan to residents around the river before carrying out the project.
"We'll do it soon. Maybe next month," Nelson said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.
The project is aimed at strengthening the river wall, since the current brickwork is subsiding.
"The river wall is prone to subsidence especially when we dredge the river bottom," he said.
The project workers, Nelson added, would start dredging the river once the piling was installed. The dredging is expected to increase the river volume and prevent the flooding that often hits Kemayoran during the rainy season.
The Central Jakarta Water Resource Agency previously identified districts in the municipality that are prone to flooding, namely Cempaka Putih, Menteng, Pasar Baru and Kemayoran.
The Sentiong River, which looped around the athletes village in Kemayoran, made headlines in July when Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan decided to cover it with a giant net to make it more presentable to Asian Games delegates. (vla)
