ire fighters have been dispatched to stop odorous white smoke emanating from a mound near the Pesanggrahan River on Jl. Anggrek 1 in Bintaro, South Jakarta, on Wednesday; however, the smoke continued.

Firemen were spotted pouring water on the mound where the smoke originated from, but in the afternoon it continued to emanate from the mound.

“Yesterday afternoon the firemen were here as well, but the smoke keeps coming,” said one of the firemen in the area on Wednesday as reported by kompas.com.

He said that the firemen even tried to directly insert the fire engine’s water spray into the mound’s crack, but the smoke kept coming, although less than before.

“We haven’t seen the source of the smoke since yesterday. I think it went deeper,” the fireman said.

Bintaro subdistrict head Dimas Prayudi said that the agency would continue trying to put out the smoke using water and had also planned to ask the Jakarta Water Resources Agency to drudge the mound.

“We have requested heavy equipment for dredging,” Dimas said.

A resident of neighborhood unit (RT) 10 and community unit (RW) 02 in Bintaro, Tomi, said that he lived around 100 meters from the site of the smoke and that it had been happening for quite a while.

“It has been this way for a long time, I think since around five months ago,” Tomi said.

He said that the smoke usually emanated a lot in the morning. When it rained on Monday, the smoke kept coming and local residents were at a loss on how to deal with it, he added. (ami)
