akarta Governor Anies Baswedan inspected the Jagakarsa Fire and Rescue Brigade in South Jakarta at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, not long after a fire broke out in Pejaten Village shopping center.

The inspection was broadcast live on Anies’ official Instagram account @aniesbaswedan.

“I'm also looking at the situation in Jakarta. Stay vigilant Pak, prioritize [firefighters'] responsiveness,” Anies said in the video.

He said firefighters should maintain the condition of their equipment and report any problems with it.

He also reminded the firefighters that fire was a common problem in Jakarta.

“They [firefighters] are on standby 24 hours a day. In Jakarta, a lot of incidents need quick responses. They [firefighting teams] are complete and always on alert. That makes me proud,” Anies said.

Before Anies’ inspection, a fire broke out at around 9 p.m. in Pejaten Village in Jatipadang, Pasar Minggu. Firefighters extinguished the fire by 9.15 p.m. The mall is managed by PT Lippo Karawaci.

Pasar Minggu Police chief Comr. Harsono said the fire may have been caused by a short circuit in the mall’s control panel room in the basement.

He said that according to a mall security guard's account, thick smoke emanated from the mall’s basement. By the time the security guard and the mall’s maintenance officer checked the control panel room, the fire had spread.

“There were no casualties in the incident,” Harsono said on Wednesday, tempo.co reported. (ami)
