The Indonesia International Institute for Life Sciences (i3L) held its inaugural graduation ceremony on Dec. 8 to celebrate the achievements of its very first batch of students. The life sciences university was established in 2013 to fill a need for university degree programs in life sciences, such as bioinformatics and biomedicine.

The university is located on Jl. Pulomas Barat, East Jakarta, and is helmed by rector Angelique Aryanto.

The ceremony named Vanda Gabriella Singing Glory Oeripto as the top bioentrepreneurship graduate, while Muhamad Fachrul was the top graduate in bioinformatics.

Other i3L students receiving recognition as the top graduates in their disciplines were: Geofanny Facicilia in biotechnology, Rio Alif Ramzi in food science and nutrition, and Shinta Marchelia Sugiharto in food technology. Giardani Syafitri received dual recognition as the top biomedicine graduate as well as the most outstanding graduate of i3L’s Class of 2018.

Several graduates have won national and international competitions and immediately secured jobs upon graduation. Rio, for example, has a job waiting for him in the food development division of chemicals distributor and manufacturer PT Lautan Luas. Other graduates are taking up positions in industries related to life sciences as well as at manufacturers such as Prodia Stem Cell, PT Kalbe Farma and Unilever Deloitte.

In his speech addressing the first graduating class, i3L Vice Rector for Administrative Affairs Iwan Surjawan congratulated the students and told them that graduation was the culmination of a long and challenging, but ultimately rewarding, journey and was a prelude to an even longer, more challenging and more satisfying journey of developing their careers.

“When you transition into a career, you should aspire to build a reputation of trustworthiness. I promise it will be a great investment for you, as it will pay back enormous dividends all your life. When we think of trustworthiness, we should not only think about relationships between people, but also between institutions,” Iwan said.

“I mean [to say] that the world needs more trustworthy leaders in the life sciences industries and businesses, because there is no force more powerful than those [individuals] capable of solving our life’s problems and of enabling billions of people to live healthier, greener and prosperous lives,” he said.
