Rupiah weakens to Rp 14,602 per US dollar after long holiday

he rupiah exchange rate weakened to Rp 14,602 per US dollar or 0.84 percent lower than on Friday, according to the Jakarta interbank spot dollar rate (JISDOR).
Meanwhile, in the spot foreign exchange market, the rupiah exchange rate stood at Rp 14,600 per US dollar at 12:30 p.m. from Rp 14,553 over the weekend.
Other regional currencies like Japan’s yen, Taiwan’s dollar, China’s yuan and Malaysia’s ringgit also weakened on Wednesday.
The US dollar index increased slightly to the 97 level after it weakened early this week due to fears of what impact the government shutdown in the United States might have. The shutdown came into effect after the state budget was not signed.
The rupiah had weakened 7.71 percent from January up to now, according to Bloomberg. Its strongest position was at Rp 13,289 per US dollar on Jan. 25, while the average rate last year was Rp 14,237 per US dollar. (bbn)
