ity-owned PT MRT Jakarta, which will operate the country’s first ever MRT service, will offer a women-only passenger car during busy hours when it commences commercial operation in March next year.
The dedicated cars would be available during morning rush hours from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and in the afternoon from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m, the company’s president director William Sabandar said.
The decision, he explained, was taken following input from respondents participating in a survey carried out by the company.
The majority of the 700 respondents agreed on the need for a dedicated car for women.
“We have conducted a survey on our website. Sixty-four percent of respondents wanted a dedicated car for women while the rest thought it would be unnecessary,” he said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
“We discussed the matter in our meeting and weighed up the harms and benefits. Finally, we agreed to offer women-only cars during certain hours,” he added.
The MRT will operate with 16 trains, with each train consisting of six cars.
William said one car would be dedicated to women, although he had yet to decide which car would be designated.
The first line on MRT Jakarta will connect Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta. It is scheduled to be fully operational in March next year. (fac)
