he US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a tsunami warning for the Philippines and Indonesia following a powerful 6.9-earthquake that struck near the island of Mindanao in Philippines, according to Reuters.
The warning stated that tsunami waves were possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake’s epicenter.
The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 7.0, with a depth of 10 km .
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced on Saturday that a 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred at the northern part of Talaud, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 69 kilometers, but did not issue tsunami warning.
Rachmat Triyono, the head of the tsunami and earthquake division at the BMKG said that the earthquake would not trigger tsunami.
“The Sangihe and Talaud Islands residents are encouraged to remain calm and not be provoked by irresponsible issues, because the earthquake has no potential for a tsunami in Indonesia,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
According to Bloomberg, Mindanao is 201 kilometers from Talaud and 288 kilometers from Sangihe, North Sulawesi. (ggq)
