A

two-meter crocodile has been frequently spotted in the Cikarang Bekasi Laut (CBL) River, scaring people of Srijaya village in Tambun Utara, Bekasi.

Tambun Police chief Comr. Rahmat Sudjatmiko said that according to reports from local residents, the crocodile had been appearing since last week but he only received the report on Wednesday morning.

"This [Wednesday] morning, we have received information that a crocodile has appeared. Alongside the residents, the subdistrict head and the Indonesian Military’s (TNI) village supervisory non-commissioned officers [Babinsa] we came to investigate but the crocodile was gone by then," Rahmat told kompas.com on Wednesday.

Rahmat added that his team, the local residents and wild animal experts would keep looking for the crocodile, which had been making the nearby inhabitants anxious.

He has also informed residents in the area to immediately report any future sightings of the crocodile to the police.

"We are working together with [crocodile experts] but we are prioritizing disseminating information to the residents about the crocodile, especially on how they should directly report a sighting so that we can take the necessary measures to capture it," Rahmat said.

He also urged the residents not to approach or do any activities near the river.

"The distance between the river and the nearest residential area is around 200 meters. Many nearby residents have plantations near the river area. I urge them to stay cautious. Don't go to the river for the time being and inform us as soon as possible [if they see a crocodile] so that we can capture it with the experts," Rahmat said. (mai)
