he Jakarta administration is set to conduct a campaign on rabies prevention on Monday in five municipalities to prevent the viral disease from spreading in the city.
Sri Hartati, head of animal farming and health at the Maritime, Fisheries and Food Security Agency (KPKP) said the activities aimed to raise awareness on the importance of handling rabies transmitted by animals such as dogs, cats and monkeys.
“We will give information to the public on how to take good care of rabies-transmitting pets,” she said on Friday as reported by kompas.com.
“This is to prevent biting cases.”
Sri dismissed reports that went viral on social media that said the agency would conduct raids in places where dogs and cats dwell. She said the agency would allow anyone who wanted to save any stray animals to do so, but noted that the agency would capture any undomesticated dogs and cats.
“But we won’t take pets owned by residents,” Sri added.
The campaign will be focused in Mangga Dua Selatan subdistrict in Central Jakarta, Sukapura subdistrict in North Jakarta, Ragunan subdistrict in South Jakarta, Jelambar subdistrict in West Jakarta and Kelapa Dua Wetan subdistrict in East Jakarta. (gis)
