A

man named Tarmad, 58, was found dead on Sunday amid the ruins of a house that had been razed by a fire in Jelambar, Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta, three days earlier.

Tarmad was reported missing by his son-in-law Andi, 32, who had been searching for him at nearby community health centers (Puskesmas) and temporary shelters since the fire broke out.

Andi finally asked Tarmad’s neighbor Hasyim to search through the burned remains of the victim’s home and found his body.

"Based on a testimony of the victim’s child, Tarmad was frequently ill and had difficulties hearing," said Tanjung Duren Police criminal unit head Adj. Comr. Rensa Aktadivia as quoted by kompas.com on Sunday.

Police suspect that when the fire broke out, the victim attempted to escape his home but became trapped.

The Jelambar fire occurred late on Friday and caused 368 people to lose their homes. It was reportedly sparked by a short circuit in one of the 40 houses that burned down. (mai)
