ith the rainy season in full swing in Jakarta, residents of flood-prone Kampung Pulo in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, have intensified flood mitigation efforts.
Local resident Hasan, 41, moved his household appliances and technological devices – including a rice cooker and a TV – from the first floor of his house to the second floor on Wednesday as part of flood mitigation efforts, wartakota.tribunnews.com reported.
He said he was "afraid that the heavy downpour that came almost everyday would cause water in the Ciliwung River to overflow along with flood water from Bogor [West Java], thus inundating the kampung."
East Jakarta Mayor M. Anwar, however, said that floods would not strike the municipality anytime soon, noting that the water level in the Katulampa Dam was 30 to 40 centimeters high.
"We should be concerned when it reaches 200 cm," Anwar said.
Several steps have been taken to ensure that the village is prepared should a major flood hit.
The water pump for the Ciliwung River, located alongside Jl. Inspeksi Kampung Pulo, was inspected and several buildings have been prepared as emergency shelters to accommodate potential victims.
The shelters are Jatinegara Santa Maria Fatima school, the Kampung Melayu subdistrict headquarters and the East Jakarta Health Agency. (vla)
