T

he Jakarta Police is still investigating a firecracker explosion incident which occurred in the parking lot of the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex, near the venue of the ongoing presidential debate in Central Jakarta on Sunday night. The explosion injured seven people.

Michael Umbas from Jokowi-Ma'ruf's national campaign team told The Jakarta Post on Monday that the victims were all supporters of incumbent Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his running mate Ma’ruf Amin.

Jokowi-Ma’ruf camp spokesperson Irma Suryani Chaniago urged the authorities to find the motive behind the incident.

“However, it was definitely to distract the public from the ongoing debate,” Irma said.

The spokesperson of Jokowi’s rival Prabowo Subianto and his partner Sandiaga Uno,  Andre Rosiade, told the Post that none of their supporters were found injured at the incident location.

“Don’t let this kind of incident break this peace. We urge the police to scrutinize this case. We hope the victims recover soon,” Andre said.

Despite knowing that the noise was a firecracker, Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono has not yet come to a conclusion on whether or not it was an act of terror.

CCTV footage seen online appears to show a white car stopping briefly prior to the incident followed by a puff of white smoke and an explosion.

“Along with the Indonesian Military [TNI], we will keep securing Jakarta until the elections are over. The public should continue with their activities and not be worried,” Argo said. (das/ggq)
