T

he Jakarta office of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 14,699 ecstasy pills from Germany. The drugs are believed to have been ordered by a drug dealer imprisoned in the city.

“The [smuggling attempt] involves a dealer currently in prison,” BNN Jakarta head Brig. Gen. Johny Latupeirissa told a press conference on Monday at his office as reported by tempo.co.

The office received information from the customs and excise directorate general on Feb. 25 that a package of ecstasy pills from Germany had been smuggled to Jakarta. The BNN had previously learned that the package would be delivered some time that month.

The package was to be sent to two addresses in Tambora and Tamansari, both in West Jakarta, through a post office delivery service. However, the package could not be sent because the addresses were invalid.

In March, two men, identified only by their initials E and D, went to the post office to pick up the package. That was when officials from the BNN arrested the suspects.

“We then arrested M, the alleged mastermind who instructed E and D [to pick up the package],” Johny said.

M is a woman who claimed to have been paid Rp 20 million (US$1,415) by TW to pick up the package. TW is a convicted drug dealer currently serving a prison sentence in Jakarta, Johny said, without elaborating. (fac)
