White foam was seen covering the canal up to 1-meter-high on Saturday.
oam in the East Flood Canal at Weir 3 sluice gate in Marinda, Cilincing, North Jakarta hindered a rowing competition held by the Indonesia Owing Sport Association (POSBI) on the river over the weekend.
White foam was seen covering the river up to 1-meter-high on Saturday.
The foam, however, did not stop the competition, which was participated in by 400 junior high school (SMP) and senior high school (SMA) students in North Jakarta, but the participants had to avoid spreading the foam and the bad odor from the river during the competition.
One of the participants, a 10th grader from SMA 52 state senior high school, Zidan, 15, said the foam had made it difficult for his team to row on the river.
"We had to row harder," Zidan said on Saturday, Warta Kota reported.
Another participant, Lulut Wijayati, 13, an eighth grader from SMP 244 state junior high school, said her team had practiced on the river routinely, and foam had covered the river during each session.
"The foam has been around for a whole, every day. During practice, we usually have to run over the foam. But now there is an exceptionally large amount of foam," Lulut said.
She said she wished the foam on the canal could be reduced soon so she and her friends could use it to practice rowing.(ami)
