T

he government and toll road operators have announced measures to ease the huge volume of traffic during the Idul Fitri exodus next week. The arrangements include discounted tolls for motorists on specific days, one-way traffic management and the opening of extra rest areas along the toll roads.

The Indonesia Toll Road Association (ATI) said homeward-bound travelers this year could enjoy 15 percent discounted tolls across the country.

Desi Arryani, head of the toll road association and director of toll road operator Jasa Marga, said the discounted fares would be applied during the exodus season, but not on days when the exodus traffic is expected to peak.

Rather, the discounted fares will be given on days with less traffic in the hope of reducing traffic density.

During the homeward stretch, the 15 percent discount will be implemented on May 27, 28 and 29, right before the traffic is estimated to reach its peak on May 30-31 and on June 1-2. For the return, the discounted fares will be effective on June 10-12 or after the peak, which is expected to occur on June 7-9.

“We’re implementing this policy in the hope that the peak of the exodus traffic will be distributed over the days when we charge the discounted tolls. Hopefully, travelers will respond to this policy, thus the burden and traffic density in the peak days can be reduced,” she said on Friday.
