Manggarai has inaugurated on Sunday its first university, the Indonesia Catholic University (UKI) of St. Paulus Ruteng, raising hopes for better human development in the regency, on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara province.
The university has been founded by combining the STIKES (health sciences college) St. Paulus Ruteng and STKIP (teacher training college) St. Paulus Ruteng.
Manggarai Regent Deno Kamelus said the change in the colleges' status marked a step forward in its efforts to improve human development in the regnecy.
"The university will provide Manggarai students with easier access to higher education without having to travel outside of the island," he said.
Kamelus pointed to Manggarai's 100 percent annual high school graduation rate, which amounted to 5,000 graduates from 28 senior high schools and 10 vocational high schools in the regency.
