he dog that was brought into the Al Munawarroh Mosque in Sentul City, Bogor regency, West Java by its owner on Sunday has been found dead.

Sentul City security head Paul Kristianto said his personnel found the small black dog lying lifeless on the side of a street near the mosque on Tuesday morning.

“Our personnel were the first ones to find the dead dog near the mosque,” Paul said on Tuesday, as quoted by tempo.co.

He added that he didn’t know what had caused its death.

“We’ve reported the dead dog to the police,” he said.

Meanwhile, local resident Esther Imelda wrote in a Facebook post that the dog was run over by a passing car as it tried to avoid several people who were approaching it in a nearby park.

“[The dog] went to cross the street, but a passing car ran it over. It died on the spot. We’re sorry we couldn’t do much,” she wrote in the Facebook post.

The post also featured several graphic photos of the dead dog including one that shows its bloody snout.

Esther said she was a member of the Indonesian Coalition Against Domestic Animal Violence. She said she had coordinated with Sentul City’s security division to look for the dog, which had run away from the Al Munawarroh Mosque as its owner, SM, became involved in an altercation with a group of people on Sunday.

She said she was not present when the dog died.

“I was informed by Sentul City’s security division of the dog’s death,” Esther said.

West Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko did not give any detailed information about the dog’s death.

SM, 52, caused a stir on social media over the weekend when a video of her entering a mosque in Sentul with her dog went viral.

Police said that SM entered the Al Munawaroh Mosque in Babakan Madang district at about 2 p.m. on Sunday, saying that she was looking for her husband. She also accused the mosque of hosting her Muslim husband’s wedding with another woman. She was accompanied by her dog,

Many Muslims consider dogs to be unclean or impure, particularly their saliva, which most try to avoid touching.

SM is currently in police custody. (rfa)
