A

man who attained fame for eating a living cat had done so to scare people away from a contested plot of land he had been guarding in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, police said.

The man, identified as Abah Gandrong, has been named a suspect of animal abuse after a video that allegedly shows him eating a living cat went viral and caused a stir on social media.

Kemayoran Police chief Comr. Syaiful Anwar said Gandrong had been brought in from Banten specifically “to guard the plot of land from people previously occupying the land,” kompas.com reported on Tuesday.

Residents of the area told tempo.co on Friday that the plot, which is currently owned by toll-road operator PT Citra Marga Nusaphala Persada (CMNP), had been used by street food sellers.

Yusuf Hamka of PT CMNP said he had assigned people to guard the plot of land, but he denied having employed Gandrong.

"I don't know the man," he told tempo.co.

He said he suspected one of the guards might have brought Gandrong into the area without seeking his approval.

Yusuf added that he would look into the case and personally meet the suspect.

Gandrong was scheduled to undergo a psychiatric examination on Friday. (ars)
