Some netizens were aghast at the scope of marine pollution when an Indonesian living in Thailand posted photographs of Indonesian product packaging that had washed up on a Thai beach.
he country has made a bold commitment to reduce the plastic waste polluting its waters in an attempt to tackle the critical marine debris problem at home, but its war on marine litter comes not a moment too soon for the region – if not overdue – with Indonesian waste washing up on a Thai beach.
Images recently surfaced on social media showing plastic packaging and other waste from Indonesian-made products that have washed ashore on a beach in Phuket, Thailand, shocking Indonesian internet users on the alarming state of marine pollution.
The images were shared on Instagram by Ivana Kurniawati (@ivana_kurniawati), an Indonesian living in Thailand, when she joined a coastal clean-up with local residents on Sunday at Phuket’s Nai Yang Beach.
Ivana showed through a series of photos the kind of trash she had found during the activity, ranging from the plastic packaging of an Indonesian-made sauce, the plastic cup of an Indonesian beverage brand and Indonesian branded sandals.
“What’s shocking — and of course, embarrassing — for me is that most of the garbage that I can identify comes from Indonesia!” Ivana posted. “I don’t know how many years the garbage has been floating in the ocean.”
