Fans of tenun ikat (traditional woven fabric) now have something new to pack in their suitcases when going on summer vacation.

IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana has transformed ikat into a light and comfortable fabric that provides beachgoers with an alternative sartorial option when heading to the beach.

“We provide the ikat artisans cotton-based materials to weave modern looks and light fabrics for the collection,” said creative director Didiet Maulana on the sidelines of the launch of the boutique’s latest collection, Binar (Shine), at the Goods Dept. fashion store in Pacific Place, Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD), Central Jakarta, last week.

Beyond woven fabric, the collection also introduced print fabric for some items such as organza tops and shawls and eye-catching ombre (color gradiation) motifs.

“We use print fabric to illustrate the transparent effect we cannot achieve by using woven fabric. But woven fabric still dominates the collection,” said Didiet.

There are more than 50 variants in the ready-to-wear Binar line, which has been available at online stores since June.

The launch at the fashion store saw IKAT Indonesia influencers, including singers Vidi Aldiano and Vira Talisa and TV personalities and personal friends, show up with their favorite pieces from the collection.

Among pieces in the collection are loose-cut two-pieces that can easily be mixed and matched, sleeveless summer dresses and kimono-style outerwear that can be used as a blazer.

There are also light jackets, shirts and two-pieces for men designed with the same multiwear concept that allows couples to wear matching clothes effortlessly.

Also in the collection are swimwear and beachwear for men, with matching flimsy outerwear that one could use as a beach cover-up or for any occasion. Long-sleeve swimwear is also available to cater to those who prefer sporting modest wear.

The highlights of the collection are the motifs created by the designing team of IKAT Indonesia. Playing with geometrical patterns and contrasting colors, the whole collection exhumes the vibe of both a playful day on the sand and the romanticism of watching fireworks afterward.

The warm color palette, according to Didiet, represented optimism in the wake of the recent divisive presidential election.

“We can’t deny that the election split us as a nation and we have to work our way toward becoming one again. The colors chosen in the collection act as encouragement to achieve that.” (ste)
