Garuda’s Tauberes online platform to cut delivery costs

N

span>National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has launched an online booking platform for air cargo-based delivery services, which the company claims to be the first online booking platform for delivery services in the country’s aviation industry.

The online platform, called Tauberes, serves as a marketplace for courier service providers such as J&T Express, Si Cepat, Pos Indonesia, Lion Parcel, Aero Express and SAP. The Tauberes platform connects courier companies with air cargo providers and end customers.

Garuda Indonesia’s director for cargo and business development, who is also the commissioner of Tauberes, Mohammad Iqbal, said that through the booking platform, customers or senders could choose which courier company they would like to use to send their package. Customers can also compare the prices offered by courier companies before making a booking as the price of each service will be displayed in one interface.

Tauberes alone could create a collaborative ecosystem between the courier companies and air cargo providers, which could make air cargo-based delivery faster, more efficient and cheaper, Iqbal said on Sept. 11.

“In the past, same-day delivery [using air cargo] was quite difficult and expensive. With this platform, hopefully, there will be more same-day delivery services at a cheaper price,” he said

Iqbal said that in the past, same-day delivery services were expensive because courier companies needed to pay a charge for 10 kilograms even if the package weighed less than 10 kg, thus making the service much more expensive.

“However, with the Tauberes booking platform, we will eliminate the 10 kg minimum rule. Packages being delivered through Tauberes will also be differentiated from regular packages at the airport, and we will also provide a different warehouse to cater to deliveries made through Tuberes at the airport. So, this platform will benefit courier companies and customers” said Iqbal.

Iqbal said that through the Tauberes platform, customer could ask the Tauberes agent to pick up their package at their house or drop off their goods at a drop-off point. Customers can also monitor the entire delivery process from pick-up to when the package is loaded on the plane.

Lion Parcel’s CEO Farian Kirana said Tauberes could benefit Lion Parcel as it was more efficient in time and cost.

“When people order the Lion Parcel service, we cannot directly deliver the package immediately as there is a 10 kg minimum rule from airlines. However, with Tauberes, packages delivered by Lion Parcel can be delivered using the earliest flight as there will be no more minimum weight, so it will automatically make the delivery faster,” said Farian.

Courier company J&T Express’ CEO Robin Lo said air cargo played a significant role for the company's delivery service as 70 percent of all J&T Express delivery was delivered as air cargo. He hoped that the Tauberes platform could reduce the company’s logistics costs and improve time efficiency.

Every day, J&T delivers about 900,000 packages, and the number could reach 2.5 million packages a day during the peak season.

Garuda Tauberes Indonesia president director Albert Burhan said Tauberes would be developed to provide different kinds of services. Tauberes wants to encompass three kinds of services — package delivery, air cargo and online shopping.

“In the future, this app will not only be able to connect Indonesian food lovers with food vendors across Indonesia with a guaranteed maximum delivery time of 8 hours, but will also be able to connect fishermen with the domestic market and export market as well as support SMEs' [small and medium-sized enterprises] distribution,” he said.
