he Jakarta administration plans to hold the Karnaval Jakarta Langit Biru (Blue Sky Parade) on Sunday to campaign for the use of environmentally friendly vehicles as one of the efforts to improve the capital’s poor air quality.

City secretary Saefullah previously issued Jakarta Secretary Instruction No. 98/2019 concerning the implementation of the Karnaval Jakarta Langit Biru. The event is to be held in cooperation with state-owned electricity firm PLN.

“The Karnaval Jakarta Langit Biru will be held to campaign for the use of vehicles that use environmentally friendly energy and to increase awareness of the importance of maintaining environmental comfort in Jakarta,” Saefullah said at a press conference on Friday.

The parade is to follow a 10-kilometer route, with the round trip starting from the Senayan traffic circle in South Jakarta and heading to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta before turning around and returning to its starting point. It is expected to last from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., which is after the weekly Car Free Day event.

The city has ordered several regional working units (SKPD) to support the parade in a number of ways, like by including electric buses from city-owned bus operator PT Transjakarta in coordination with the Jakarta Transportation Agency.

Apart from the electric buses, there would also be other electric vehicles are to enliven the parade, including electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, electric bajaj (three-wheeled taxis), electric cars and electric taxis.

“We will prepare art performances, such as tanjidor [traditional Betawi instrument) and colossal dances of the archipelago,” Saefullah stated.
