ogor City Council has formed a team to audit the worthiness and safety of the council’s building after its walls and ceiling collapsed during a heavy rainstorm on Saturday.

The incident raises concern for many people as the building, which cost the city Rp 72 billion (US$5,13 million), had just been inaugurated in April this year.

City council head Atang Trisnanto said the decision to form a research team was taken after a meeting among the council’s executives on Sunday.

“We decided that the audit will be conducted by members of Commission III overseeing development and environment, because members of other commissions are currently taking part in a four-day orientation program in Bandung, West Java so they are unable to handle the task,” he said.

The audit team, he said, would assess the worthiness of the building and supervise the reconstruction process while making sure the building was safe after the renovation.

“After checking the collapsed structure, we found that the wall did not contain an iron structure, so it’s no surprise the wall collapsed after a rainstorm. It means the wall in the opposite direction poses the same hazard. We don’t want the same thing to happen again in the future. A huge sum of money was spent to construct the Bogor City Council building, so it supposed to be very sturdy. We will make sure to investigate the incident thoroughly,” Atang said.

He said the building needed to be renovated to fit the proper building safety standards, adding that if the research team found out that the material used for constructing the building was of lesser quality than the original plan, he would take the case to court.
