enny Wahid, the daughter of former president and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) leader Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid, has been elected by acclamation as the new chairperson of the Indonesian Sport Climbing Federation (FPTI).

Succeeding in the post Faisol Riza, Yenny is to run the federation until 2023. She was elected at a national meeting in Jakarta on Saturday.

“I will do my best to build [the FPTI] into a good organization. We need to increase the quality of human resources within the organization, and hopefully we can create more winning athletes,” the new chief said in a statement on the federation’s website, fpti.or.id.

The federation expressed hope that Yenny would help it groom local athletes and referees to boost the athletes’ ability to compete against foreign climbers.

The federation’s head of organizational affairs, Waras Budi Hartawan, said the FPTI’s main goal was to send Indonesian climbers to the Tokyo Olympic Games next year.

“We are preparing [our athletes] for the Olympic qualifiers. We hope the new leader can help us reach our Olympic target,” said Waras.

Outside the sports world Yenny is known for her effort to follow in the footsteps of Gus Dur, who was known as a champion of pluralism and moderate Islam. Yenny is one of the founders and leaders of the Wahid Institute, a rights group that promotes a pluralistic and peaceful Islam.
