ew year’s resolutions are a common tradition, but Jakartans of the so-called Generation Z eye more than just a commitment to themselves.

Some of those youths, born between 1996 and 2010, have announced plans of improvement both for themselves and for bigger causes in 2020.

Regina Dhamayanti has set out on what she calls “the 52 weeks learning challenge”. Every week this year, she vows, she will choose at least one topic to learn — it may be science, social issues, religion or the most recent news — and write a short summary on the topic.

“The challenge is mainly to keep the learning spirit [alive],” she said on Friday.

The 23-year-old, who has been working at a private company for more than a year, said that, over the past year, a lot of her time was allocated for work, and she felt she did not have the time to learn about other things.

“By the time I have some spare time, I’m so tired that it’s the time for me to either sleep or do things that don’t require a lot of thinking. I need to manage my time. I do still have room for myself, but I want to make sure this room is put to good use,” said Regina, who confided that she recently resumed the practice of New Year’s resolutions after not making any last year.

Proficiency in a new language, meanwhile, is the goal for Kharisma, a 22-year-old college student studying in Jakarta.
