The Gandhi underpass was hit with 3 meters of inundation following heavy rain on Sunday morning.
he Kemayoran Complex Management Center (PPK) is to hold discussions with the central government to anticipate inundation at the Gandhi underpass in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta as rainfall continues to batter the city.
The center’s director for planning and development, Riski Renando, said he got in contact with the Public Works and Housing Ministry after the underpass experienced 2.5 meters of flooding on Jan. 24.
“We have been looking for field data and assessing the conditions since the water was supposed to flow [freely without causing a flood],” Riski told The Jakarta Post on Saturday, refusing to reveal when he would speak with the city administration.
After the flooding in January, Riski said the management center would also schedule a meeting with the city administration in the coming week. The plan, however, has not transpired.
The underpass was hit with 3 meters of inundation following heavy rain on Sunday morning, according to the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency. Floodwaters subsided to 1.5 to 2-m-high on Monday, with 15 water pump cars used to dump the water submerging the underpass into Lake Sunter in North Jakarta.
The Kemayoran management center is looking into options to improve the flow of water at the underpass -- by improving the system at its water reservoirs and increasing the number of water pumps dedicated for the area, Riski said.
“When rainfall is too heavy, coupled with high tides just like what happened that day [in January] and the rivers overflowed, much of the water at the underpass could not be discharged into the sea or elsewhere,” he said.
