rom smelters and tourist hotspots to “green fuel” and high-speed railways, the government has set its sights on completing 41 priority projects estimated to cost a combined Rp 7.4 quadrillion (US$540 billion) between 2020 and 2024, an official document shows.

According to the 2020-2024 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) signed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Jan. 20, Indonesia’s development programs are aimed at achieving three goals: independence, justice and sustainability. The priority projects are also aimed at boosting economic growth, human capital development and disaster mitigation.

“We hope that by 2045, our gross domestic product [GDP] per capita will reach US$23,199. Therefore, an economic transformation needs to begin in 2020 to build a strong foundation for our growth,” National Development Planning Minister Suharso Monoarfa said on Feb. 4.

President Jokowi envisioned Indonesia becoming one of the world’s top five largest economies by 2045 with a poverty rate of almost zero percent. Annual per capita income is expected to grow fivefold to Rp 320 million, or

Rp 27 million per month.

The RPJMN lays out the government’s plans to build 2,500 kilometers of new toll roads, 3,000 km of new roads, operate 7,635 km of railway and extend broadband coverage to 95 percent of villages.

As Jokowi seeks to attract investment, rev up industries and accelerate infrastructure development in his second term, the 41 priority projects in the RPJMN are expected to transform Indonesia’s economy.
