Many Indonesians are enjoying a long weekend thanks to the celebration of Islamic New Year, which fell on Thursday, and an extra day off declared by the government for Friday.

Many apparently opted to spend their free time at tourism destinations, including beaches, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pangandaran Beach on the south coast of West Java, for example, was swamped by hundreds of visitors in the past few days, forcing authorities to monitor them to ensure the implementation of COVID-19 health protocol. (vny)
