ealth Minister Terawan Agus Putranto is set to join a press conference organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday to speak about Indonesia’s successful application of a national COVID-19 Intra-Action Review (IAR).

The IAR is a periodic review of a country’s national and subnational COVID-19 response to grab critical opportunities for improvement to respond to the ongoing pandemic, the guidance of which was published by the WHO on July 23.

A country facilitates its own IAR process, bringing together COVID-19 responders knowledgeable of the in-country public health response to identify practical areas for immediate remediation.

The WHO said Indonesia had successfully conducted a national COVID-19 IAR and applied critical lessons identified during the IAR for the improvement of COVID-19 outbreak response in the country.

In a letter addressed to Terawan, WHO emergency preparedness assistant director general Jaouad Mahjour said Terawan would be joined by WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and health ministers from three other countries in Friday’s conference.

“During this pandemic, it is critical for countries to continually reflect on their ongoing response strategies and adjust their approach as needed to strengthen preparedness and response capacities,” Mahjour said in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Jakarta Post.

By continually reviewing and adapting the current response strategies, Mahjour added, countries might have the opportunity to change the trajectory of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Indonesia has entered its eighth month of the COVID-19 battle since the first cases were identified in early March, but the rate of transmission has shown no signs of decreasing.

With 425,796 coronavirus infections and 14,348 cases that have turned fatal as of Thursday, Indonesia is currently the country with the highest confirmed cases and fatalities linked to COVID-19 in Southeast Asia.
