he COVID-19 pandemic has apparently failed to scare young shuttlers off and keep them from participating in badminton tournaments as 112 young athletes, who are currently training with PB Djarum, are gearing up to participating in the highly anticipated 2020 PB Djarum League, which is set to be held from Monday to Sunday this week.

The tournament will be divided into five groups, men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles. The athletes will also being divided into six ages categories: 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and adult.

Young athletes who are currently training at the National Training Camp such as Bobby Setiawan, Syabda Perkasa Belawa and Muhammad Asqar Harianto will be participating in the men’s singles category. While Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi and Bilqis Prasista are among those playing in the women’s singles category.

Djarum Jati Sport Center, which is located in Kudus, Central Java and owned by PB Djarum, will be hosting the tournament. PB Djarum chief Yoppy Rosimin said the Rp 120 million tournament had been set as alternative stage for the young players as a result of the pandemic.

“We are witnessing many local and international tournaments being either postponed or shut down. Therefore, as a club, we are obliged to provide stages so our athletes can sharpen their skills and gain experience,” Yoppy said in a press statement received by The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

The matches will be held without spectators and therefore will be aired on the club’s Youtube channel and Kaskus TV channel.

Mohammad Ahsan, who, along with Hendra Setiawan is one of Indonesia’s leading men’s doubles players, praised the league, saying the tournament would be the perfect way for the young athletes to improve their technique.
