There have barely been any surprises in the 2020 simultaneous regional elections, as two major parties seem to be enjoying the most success: the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the Golkar Party.
For every political party in Indonesia, winning any kind of election is an ambition that must be fulfilled.
But after the 2020 simultaneous regional elections on Wednesday, two of the country’s major parties seem to be enjoying the most success: the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the Golkar Party.
The PDI-P is expected to maintain its grip on its primary strongholds, including in Central Java, Bali and North Sulawesi, following provisional election results that point to probable victories in those regions.
In Central Java, the party has expressed its optimism of winning 17 out of 21 mayoral and regency elections, based on quick count survey and real-time vote count data of the General Elections Commission (KPU) called Sirekap.
Among the big projected wins in Central Java is the expected victory of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, in the Surakarta mayoral contest. Two pollsters, Charta Politika and Voxpol Center, revealed that he and his running mate Teguh Prakosa were leading the race after gaining over 86 percent of the sampled votes.

The pollsters’ predictions are still in line with the 86.5 percent of votes that Gibran-Teguh have garnered according to KPU’s real-time data, which, as of Friday, tallies 56 percent of the total vote in Surakarta.
