apan has expressed interest in having one of its consortiums join Indonesia in operating the newly inaugurated Patimban seaport in West Java, following the recent appointment of a local operator, a representative of the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia has said.
The Minister of Economic Affairs at the Japanese Embassy, Tadayuki Miyashita, said that an operation partnership between Indonesia and Japan could boost the efficiency of the seaport management.
“We are looking forward to seeing a Japanese consortium join the Indonesian consortium to form a partnership as an Indonesia-Japan joint operator, as agreed by the Indonesian President and Japanese prime minister,” he said during his keynote speech at the Patimban port public expose on Jan. 7, likely referring to earlier talks between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on a joint operation for the port.
On Dec. 30, the Transportation Ministry announced the appointment of a consortium, consisting of tycoon Chairul Tanjung-backed PT CTCorp Infrastruktur Indonesia, PT Indika Logistic & Support Services, PT U Connectivity Services, and a subsidiary of state-owned port operator Pelindo III, PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya, to operate Patimban seaport.
The consortium is set to operate the seaport for 40 years since its first phase of operation began in December under a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme. Under the agreement, the total capital to operate the port amounts to Rp 18.9 trillion (US$1.3 billion) with an operating cost of Rp 64.3 trillion, according to the ministry’s statement. The consortium will also establish an operating entity.
“The port will attract more foreign direct investment from around the world, in particular from Japan,” Tadayuki said. “Japan is ready to keep cooperating in this project from hard, soft and institutional infrastructure.”
