hinese President Xi Jinping called Monday for international cooperation, saying an ideological war would "hurt the interests of each country," with tensions between the world's two major powers intensifying.
Xi also said in a speech at a virtual event hosted by the World Economic Forum that "small circles" and a "new Cold War" only "lead to a division in the world" and "conflict," apparently urging new US President Joe Biden to pursue multilateralism.
His public remarks, which were the first since Biden took office last Wednesday, indicated that he does not want the new US president to continue to adopt a hardline approach against China like his predecessor Donald Trump.
Expectations are mounting that China will try to improve ties with the United States under Biden, who is likely to take a softer tone toward China than Trump, foreign affairs experts say.
Under the Trump administration, relations between Beijing and Washington have been deteriorating as the two nations have been at odds over issues such as trade, cutting-edge technology, the South China Sea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The World Economic Forum usually holds its annual meeting in January, but it was postponed this year against a backdrop of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The gathering is scheduled to take place in Singapore in May.
