aniHub, one of Indonesia’s leading agriculture technology start-ups, expects robust growth in staple food sales during Ramadan this year, in a rebound from last year, as the country relaxes mobility restrictions.

“If we look at the current landscape, between twofold and threefold growth should not be impossible for this year as we set the target very high, taking into account the recovery versus last year’s crisis,” Tanihub supply chain director Sariyo told reporters on March 31.

He said the start-up’s sales figures could rebound to prepandemic levels following Ramadan, which is expected to begin on April 12. Increased road traffic and dine-in services, enabled by Indonesia’s vaccination program, signaled a potential surge in food demand.

If the forecast holds, TaniHub’s Ramadan sales will be a reversal of last year’s, when consumers dined in restaurants significantly less and stocked up on groceries ahead of the holiday in response to large-scale social restrictions (PSBB).

Domestic chili, sugar and rice demand, among other key foods, is expected to approach prepandemic levels during Ramadan and Idul Fitri, as urban mobility restrictions are more relaxed than they were at the same time last year, although intercity holiday travel has been banned again.

Sariyo expected chicken meat, eggs and rice to be in the highest demand during Ramadan this year. Last year, fruits and vegetables were in the highest demand, according to company data.
