Audit agency accused of discrimination following dismissal of disabled candidate

ctivists have accused the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) of discriminating against people with disabilities after a civil servant candidate claimed he was denied his right to employment at the agency’s regional office in Padang, West Sumatra, due to a medical condition.

It was a delightful time in January 2019 when Alde Maulana, 37, received the good news of him passing a long series of tests to become a civil servant at the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK).

He had applied as a civil servant at the agency in 2018 following the announcement of openings for disabled applicants for several positions. In 2015, he survived a brain aneurysm that left him half blind and with acute flaccid paralysis, symptoms of which include sudden weakness in the arms or legs.

However, things changed in March 2019, when Alde suffered from seizures during training as a civil servant candidate at the BPK. He said the seizure had been triggered by taxing activities throughout the training course.

As a civil servant candidate, all participants, including the ones applying to fulfill the disability quota, were required to participate in every training session, which includes marching and assemblies every morning and evening. Alde was no exception, even though doctors had advised him to avoiding heavy activities due to a history of aneurysm.

He was taken to a hospital for a CT scan, where doctors found a buildup of fluid in the part of his brain where he suffered from aneurysm.
