uman rights watchdogs have demanded transparency in the police investigation into the death of a 13-year-old boy, who was allegedly beaten to death by police officers in Padang, West Sumatra.
The body of the schoolboy, identified only as AM, was found on June 9 under a bridge in Padang by bystanders, who reported the discovery to the police.
His family filed a report with the Padang Police the following day after finding suspicious blunt impact injuries to the boy’s abdomen and chest, Kompas.id reported. The police are still investigating the death.
The Padang Legal Aid Institute (LBH Padang), which represents the family of the boy, alleged that he died after being tortured by police officers, who stopped him and his friends on suspicion of attempting to incite brawls, according to Kompas.id.
His death has attracted public attention after news reports about the alleged police brutality made the rounds on social media.
“The police must solve the case transparently,” Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) commissioner Dian Sasmita said on Sunday, as quoted by Antara.
Deputy Padang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Rully Indra Wijayanto said in a press briefing on Saturday that officers from West Sumatra Police rounded up 18 teenagers armed with sharp weapons on motorcycles on the bridge at dawn on June 9 and brought them to Kuranji Police station. But Rully said that the boy in question was not among those brought in.
