T

he United States plans to host the first in-person summit with Japan, Australia and India in Washington in the fall, a senior official said Tuesday.

Speaking at a think-tank event, White House coordinator for the Indo-Pacific Kurt Campbell said, "Our goal is to hold an in-person Quad meeting" to take place "here in Washington in the fall with all leaders in attendance."

If realized, it will be the first face-to-face summit among the four. The leaders -- US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi -- met virtually in April, marking the first summit of the group of democratic nations as it seeks to counter China's growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.
