ndonesia on Wednesday surpassed 1,000 daily deaths from COVID-19, shattering previous records just as the government splits into two teams to focus on the pandemic response in regions outside of Java and Bali.

Authorities has enforced emergency public activity restrictions (PPKM Darurat) across the nation’s most populous and popular islands, which are currently seeing an explosion of cases – the worst since the start of the pandemic. But now there are signs the outbreak is spreading to other regions as well.

Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto called for 43 regencies in 20 provinces outside Java and Bali to impose tighter micro-scale public activity restrictions (PPKM Mikro) until July 20, after they had been classified as “level 4” risk areas.

The minister, who also heads the national economic recovery and COVID-19 response committee (KPCPEN), revealed that the past week saw a significant increase in the number of level 4 risk areas, from 30 on July 1 to 43 just four days later.

Notably, as stipulated in a Health Ministry decree, the level 4 classification is set aside for regencies or cities with more than 50 confirmed cases per 100,000 people per week, a hospitalization rate greater than 30 patients per 100,000 people per week, and a mortality rate of more than five deaths per 100,000 people per week.

Under the tighter PPKM Mikro, offices of government agencies, regional administrations and the private sector in level 4 areas are required to limit their work capacity to 25 percent and allow remaining employees to work from home.

Schools are also required to call off in-class learning plans, as all educational activities must be carried out online. Similarly, activities in places of worship and other public areas that can potentially pull crowds have been banned.
