10 fishermen from Rokan Hilir regency, Riau, returned home on Friday after being detained since Nov. 5 by Malaysian authorities for allegedly crossing the border into Malaysian waters.

The fishermen returned home using two ships and arrived at about 10 p.m. at Hasan Pier on Jl. Karya in West Bagan subdistrict, Bangko district. They were all in good condition, the Rokan Hilir regency administration said on its website.

Rokan Hilir Inspectorate Office head Sarman Syahroni welcomed the fishermen home, representing Regent Bistaman, accompanied by Rolam Hilir Fishery Agency head Firdaus, agency secretary Deni Arif and head of catch fishery Romi. Also welcoming the fishermen were the head of Rokan Hilir branch of the Indonesian Fishermen’s Association (HNSI) Jaswadi and families of the fishermen.

Sarman expressed his gratitude on the fishermen’s homecoming and said that it was the result of the cooperation of multiple parties, especially the regent who directly coordinated with the Malaysian Consulate in the provincial capital of Pekanbaru and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Bistaman visited the Malaysian Consulate on Thursday and met Consul Muhammad Syah to discuss the arrested fishermen and secure their release.

“Thank God, the 10 fishermen have returned tonight and arrived safely here in Bagansiapiapi,” said Sarman.
